Most discussions about 1950s race relations center around the murder of Emmett Till and Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott, both in 1955. This article looks at a different way blacks, specifically black women entertainers were asserting their identity as different but not less-than. How might the expressions and self-representation of African and African American women influence the burgeoning Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s using international sources and pressures? In your discussion identify why bringing an international element into the Civil Rights Movement would put even greater pressure on the United States to make changes.
